Link: http://www.archiecomics.com/index.htmlI enjoyed reading this comics in my tween days until today! And the competition and friendship between Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper really made me think about my own friendships and life at school. The comics also taught me about how to be friends with boys. There are also great and fun stories about the characters and their families. And it's fun to read and the reader does not even realize he/she is learning some great life lessons while reading and enjoying the illustrations!
One great lesson is from a story where Betty stayed overnight in the Lodge's mansion. At first, Veronica was sure that Betty would get jealous over seeing how luxurious life is in the rich house of the Lodge's. She even felt sad for Betty over her simple and ordinary life, house, and parents. That was until before they sleep. Becky made a phone call to her parents to say good night and to tell them that she loves them. Veronica sobbed and fell into tears telling Betty how lucky she was for having such a sweet relationship with her family, unlike her who seldom knows where her parents are. Then, Betty gave her a nice, warm hug.
Awww.. I miss these girls and the gang. Gotta go and buy more comics! See yah!

The anchor on the local radio announced the dreadful news, "Opisyal na po. Michael Jackson, pumanaw na." (It's official, Michael Jackson has died.") Then the music "Give Love on Christmas Day" was played. My mother, Louella, broke into tears.
I could only imagine all the mothers and fathers about my parents' age who grew up listening to the Jackson 5 and spent school days, rest days, and most especially, Christmas days with Jackson 5 Christmas songs playing in the Christmas air, hearing that news on that same hour. In the U.S., the news of Michael's cardiac arrest broke as the sun was setting down but in the Philippines, a new day was already starting and the fans and the curious had to follow the news throughout the whole day. It was a gloomy day for our generation. Fan or not, Michael Jackson is a huge part of the world's culture, and always, a death of a major symbol of culture, of a relevant background in different people's lives, is something that saddens the human heart.Michael Jackson's songs and his era remind us so much of our childhood.
My brother told me that the release of the highly-anticipated Michael Jackson's "Bad" music video was his first experience of being aware that a new song from a great artist is big news and that new music is something that people are excited about. Like other kids back then, my office mate and I share the same view, thinking that Michael Jackson's videos were mini-movies/musicals. Then, personally while growing up, my conciertos in our bathroom were comprised of Jackson songs, starting with "One Day in Your Life," "Ben," "I'll Be There," and then later on, "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "You are Not Alone," "Will You Be There," and "Heal the World." And then many years later, looking back to the time I started acquiring a sense of social awareness while watching and getting inspired by the videos "We are the World," "They Don't Care About Us," "The Earth Song," and "Man in the Mirror." I found myself using such powerful songs in my major paper for the Development Communication class where I was enrolled.Saturday Night, my family and I watched a clip from CNN which showed Cebu prisoners doing a dance number as a tribute to Michael Jackson. It was my turn to cry.
Well, Jojo Alejar cried, and Gary Valenciano and the Maneuvers, and perhaps Aga Mulach, and Alex Santos, and maybe Billy Crawford and Sara Geronimo, too, and all Filipinos, artists or not who felt that Michael Jackson and his songs played a nice and sweet contribution in coloring their lives. I'm sure my uncles are crying too, over Michael's death and over reminiscing their youth.
Well, as for me, this write-up is my little tribute to the great artist of our time, who has inspired many with his passion for music, for the world, for all people and for all children. Rest in peace, MJ and I pray that finally, in your repose, you have finally found the healing you had been looking for.

ALL RICE! I have been donating rice in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Uganda, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar for almost a year now. Of course I don’t go hopping between those countries nor personally handing out my donations to their people. But I try to log on to www.freerice.com every day so I could play some good knowledge question game and win and donate rice in the process. It is very easy really; I mean the process is so convenient and fun that thousands have been playing. To date, a total of 58,504,473,600 grains of rice have been donated. Players get to feed their mind while they also get to help feed the hungry. FreeRice is a website that works with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University to help end hunger around the world. Sponsors such as A&W, KFC, Long John Silver’s, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Yum make all payments to WFP directly. WFP buys the rice from local farmers to support the local community and then distributes all of the rice donated through the game. As stated in the website: “In countries where rice is a staple part of the diet, WFP provides, on average, about 400 grams of rice per person, per day (for families, including children and adults). That is intended for two meals that include other ingredients to ensure a minimum of 2,100 kilocalories per day. There are about 48 grains of rice in a gram.” One correct answer is equals to 10 grains of rice. So, when you get 40 correct answers a day, you get to feed one hungry person every day. Questions vary from easy to difficult. You may choose the level of difficulty of your game and you may also start at level 0 and let the site rate the level appropriate to you as according to your performance. A warning though; once you commit a mistake, you can’t click the BACK button to try again and choose the correct answer! (I found out about this when I tried to cheat for a good cause! LOL!) Of course there are many other ways to help end hunger and poverty. You may also visit http://www.fromhungertohope.com/ and http://www.poverty.com or go directly to http://www.poverty.com/more.html for a list of other organizations that work in the fight against poverty. Really, there are many ways to help. And freerice.com is one among the fastest approaches to fight world hunger. Let us join this game and win! this is very cute..
